What Compels People To Collect?

By: Diane2

In the end, you will only get satisfaction from your collection for two reasons. You must be able to appreciate the items already in your collection and you must look forward to the hunt for any items you are missing in your collection.

How Do You Display Your Collectibles?
While many people are content to just store their collectibles in boxes, most want to view and handle them on a daily basis. However, if they want to display them in their homes, they find that this is quite a challenge. Ultimately, they find that collectibles lose their effect if they are scattered out rather than displayed in one area.

Many small collectibles can make a flat surface such as a desk, dresser, or side table, look very cluttered. The best place to display this type of collectible is on a shelf or in a glass case where they will garner attention when viewed. In terms of glass cases, a curio cabinet is a good choice. It will not only allow you to display your collectibles beautifully, but it will protect them from damage, dust and dirt. If you collect certain items like baseballs, matches, thimbles, marbles, or flags, you might need to buy a special display case that is made just for them. Depending on the size of your house, you may even be able to devote an entire room to your collection.

Rotating the items in your collection is an option if you lack the space needed to display the entire collection at one time.

Collecting No-No’s
If you collect, you should always be sure to maintain your financial responsibility. Your mortgage payment, your bills, and your savings should be a priority over that new item that you “have to have”.
If you find that you are unable to separate your collection from your daily life or that you cannot stop yourself from making new purchases, you are becoming obsessed with collecting and you should seek some help.

Try to keep your collection in perspective. Your family should always be your first priority. Your collection is inanimate and will not suffer if you spend time with your family.

Collecting Hints
Many collections have vast varieties of items that you can amass. Some people enjoy the challenge of obtaining every item in the set. This can, however, be very expensive and not very realistic. You might try narrowing your collection down to just one part of the set.
Don’t try to force your collecting preferences on friends and family. Chances are, it you start a collection for them, they will not continue to invest money in it.

To get more enjoyment from your seasonal collections, like Christmas decorations, try putting them out just a little earlier than normal.
Items should not be bought just because they seem like good investments. You should also have some interest in the item you are buying. This is because if the item you are collecting suddenly loses its value, you don’t want to be stuck with something that you may not necessary like that has absolutely no monetary value to you.

As far as hobbies go, collecting can be great fun and very challenging. As a collector, you will be able to gather, show off, and enjoy your collection. If you can avoid obsessing over the collection, it is a very rewarding hobby.
