Video Game arent just for kids

By: Aj Martirano

Video games are pleasant distractions, yes. Not unless you're a pretty shallow personthe new video games are little more than interactive movies. You merely take center stage as the main character. Video games are a multi-billion dollar industry present in over two-thirds of American households. About a third of parents play and the average player age has steadily increased to about 33.

Video games are a perfect example of this divide yet here we are TRYING to force the differences down each others throats despite the intimate knowledge of the true natural differences. Video games are no longer looked upon as kids entertainment. Walk into any video games outlet, and you will see 20-30 year olds checking out the latest versions of Grand Theft Auto or the Sims. Video games are a technological explosion from year to year as the games become more and more realistic, jumping in a very short time from flat screens with bouncing balls to 3-D total immersion games.

Video games can now talk to you, using your name and they have become so realistic that there are even devices that make you feel vibrations in your hands when you bump into a wall or get punched by an enemy.

Video games are now a huge market with a focused "captive" audience. Bringing advertising into the game experience in a natural way, in the background, with product placement, integrated with the characters, will greatly improve the experience. Video games are as legitimate an art form as paintings, novels, or films. The interactive nature of games allows them to give people new perspectives, new ways of seeing situations by participating in them. Video games are the latest in a series of media technologies to suffer from the singularity of derision that a moral panic brings. Other media technologies that have been the subject of moral panics include the popular newspaper in the mid-19th century, the so-called "dime novel" at the end of the 19th century, movies at the beginning of the 20th century, television in the mid-20th century and the Internet in the 1990s.

Video games are even less historical than movies, but it seems ironic that with the continuing resurgence in all things World War II that the details are often so bad. Many video games feature German soldiers that more closely resemble the vile villains from 1960s-era “Sgt. Video games are not just a way to pass the time; they are a source of pride. Video games are largely the province of bored males who satisfy some of their cravings for power by blasting away the enemies, time and time again.

Video games are meant to be fun. Take yer high-fallutin ideas of idea expression and concept vehicles and shove 'em. Video games are profoundly motivating for players, and it is important to understand the sources of this motivation if it is to provide a foundation for learning. One hypothesis is that problem solving and learning, along with display of mastery, are themselves a key source of motivation in good video games.
