The Importance Of Color In Web Designing

By: Peter Brittain

When we visit a website, the first thing which we notice is color scheme. Layering your web page with color is one of the most powerful methods to yield different results with two similar sites. It is considered important because it affects the visitors’ moods, create ideas, invoke feelings, and intensifies the areas of interest. Thus website designers treat colors as the basics of designing graphics and layout.

Importance of color

Your chosen color scheme can influence visitors physiologically and psychologically. The color scheme of your site can leave a negative or positive impact on your audience and your web site readability. Moreover there are certain color schemes which suites with particular industries for example it is not advisable to use a baby pink or blue for a web site which deals with real estate or construction firm but these colors would definitely be appreciated when used for sites meant for kids clothing or toys. Apart from this, it is recommended to use color schemes as per the target audience and business market. Giant corporations invest millions of dollars to decide the perfect color for the packaging and branding of their product. The reason is to increase profitability through the perfect blend of colors.

Color affects our feelings, our thoughts, and definitely our interactions. Usually there’s not much time once your visitor has made his mind to visit your site so you have make your website appealing to keep his or her interest. With suitable colors, you can make your visitor feel relaxed and comfortable. If you have a water based product, and placed it on a purple or an orange colored site, you will lose its marketability. This is because purple and orange are not related to either to water or nature thus projecting a false impression about your site and products. However, if you would have place the same product with colors such as green or blue the site would have captivated the user’s attention and would have increased the desire for the product. However, not all the websites adhere to this thought process.

Multi colors sites usually decrease visitation time. However, a smart way to use multi colors, to increase visitation time would be to use not more than five colors, and keep those colors warm and cool on a white background. It is advisable to keep the background of the text white because white is soothing to the eyes and provide a sense of professionalism.

Warm colors include yellow, orange, orange-red, and yellow-green. These colors are exciting and aggressive so it is better to apply them in small amounts. Cool colors include blue, green, pink, and magenta. Usually human emotions are triggered by color. It is better to have an in-depth knowledge of colors, which trigger the emotions. Every color reflects some emotion, and it may happen that the message, which you want to portray, is not being conveyed properly due to using wrong colors. Usually decorative colors magnify the layout and makes it quite appealing or establishing a style. On the other hand, functional color that is used for informational design represents information precisely.

Good web designers always recommend being consistent with the colors throughout the site because they are the deciding factors to set the mood of your customers for your site. So, use colors intelligently to increase your sales and leave those rainbow colors for rainy days.
