The Birth of Classic Watches – Built with Elegance and Style

By: David Urmann

Classic watches are still one of the best selling watches. They have stood through time and are still being improved with additional features like a calendar, GPS receivers and the like.

During the 15th century, the raise in European sea-going routes has increased the demand for handy timepieces. This is due to the fact that within a one way trip, a ship can measure its longitude by comparing the noon hours (high noon) of the limited longitude to that of a European meridian. Later on, this is by means of time being kept on a shipboard clock already. Nevertheless, this process seemed very unreliable. This is until the introduction of Mr. John Harrison’s marine chronometer. From then on, the majority of the maps from the 15th century up to the 19th century comprised of precise latitudes and vague longitudes.
In 1524, Peter Henlein produced the earliest pocket watch. Initially, watches only had an hour hand and a minute hand. It also seemed hopeless at that time because of the erroneousness of the watch mechanism. In the year 1850, Aaron Lufkin Dennison founded the Waltham watch company. This company initiated the industrial manufacturing of pouch watches that have exchangeable parts.
Functions
Watches usually give the time and date. Sometimes, it can provide the current date as well. However after some time and the birth of many new inventions, many watches now can also supply a huge deal of information. Aside from the basic time and date features, some watches now have alarms. For the blind community, there are watches now that can talk. Apart from the time and date, blind people can also put there schedules in.
Types
1. Fashion
Wristwatches are most of the time treated as a piece of jewelry. Sometimes, they are showcased as collectible works of art instead of time pieces. This concept was actually implemented by several different markets for wristwatches. This would range from very cheap but accurate watches used for no other reason than telling the correct time, to extremely expensive watches that merely act as a personal decoration or as an example of high attainment. This is along with exquisite standards and accurate mechanical engineering.
Aside from this, there is also another market that features “geek watches”. This kind of watches not only tell the time but can also be incorporated with computers, satellite navigation, and lots of many other features that can be separated from the usual concept of timekeeping. A double timed watch is designed usually for travelers. These are designed in order to let them know the time they have in their own country and the time where they will be going to or currently in.
Some watch companies make specialized and custom designed watches as well. They are considered high-end watches because they are very expensive. This would include the Omega, Rolex and Breitling brands. They specialize and custom design watches and mixing it with jewelry such as gold or diamonds. Other fine mechanical devices from companies such as Casio focus in making watches as timepieces or multifunctional computers. Thus, in the year 1980s, the Swiss Swatch company hired graphic designers to decorate an annual collection of non-repairable watches.
2. Computerized multi-function watches
A lot of computerized wristwatches nowadays have consumer interfaces due to the tiny screens, buttons, and short battery life span that it has. As miniaturized electronics became cheaper, watches that are produced these days contain calculators, video games, and digital cameras and GPS receivers. Others may be converted into a mobile phone.
3. Watches for space travel
The expensive and quality made Omega Speed master is usually used by NASA.
Since there is gravitational environment and other tremendous conditions are being encountered by astronauts in space, they are required to utilize specially tested watches. Thus, the Breitling Company invented the 24-hour analog watch. This is simply designed to avoid any confusion between the AM and the PM time frame, which is proven to be worthless in space.
4. for scuba diving
This type of watch is commonly used by divers. Brands and models for this would include the Seiko 7002-7020 Diver's 200 m on a 4-ring NATO style strap.
Since most watches now are featured to be water resistant, there are watches that are also oftentimes regarded as diving watches. This type of watch is very much suitable for scuba diving.
Hence, the International Organization for Standardization set a standard for water resistant watches. This is to prohibit the word "waterproof" from being used in connection to watches. Water resistant watches are actually achieved by gaskets that form a watertight seal, which is also used in combination with a sealant. Moreover, this is being applied on the watch’s casing in order to prevent the water from getting in. Of course, the materials used for this type of watch must pass the standard set by the organization.
These watches are actually being tested in still water. Therefore, a watch with a 50 meter rating would be water resistant if it is motionless while a watch that is less than 50 meters would be otherwise. If watches are meant for regular usage, it should also be tested to be able to withstand the pressure under water.
Some features to consider in choosing a diving watch in the market are as follows:
1. Water resistant – This type will only be able to tolerate splashes of water or even rain
2. 50 meter capacity - This means that it can be used while taking a shower, bathing, washing the dishes as well as swimming in shallow water.
3. 100 meter capacity – This type can be used only while swimming and snorkeling
4. 150 meter watch – This type is usable for specific water sports
5. 200 meter capacity – This can also be used for water sports, along with free diving
6. diver’s 150 meter capacity - This is the ISO standard capacity for scuba diving purposes
