Shape of Things to Come in the Online Gaming Microcosm

By: reclaimer.45

In 2006, the video gaming industry's console, game and accessories grosses soundly trounced the Film Industry's box office grosses. Game Spot, a successful video game outlet, posted $1.7 billion in revenues for last year's Christmas Season.

In fact, December proved to be a milestone in video gaming's conquest of Pop culture, with top leagues announcing $1.75 million worth of performance contracts with the top professional players on the 18th of December. MLG currently airs a weekly television show on USA Network, and the earning potential of online video gaming is starting to exhibit its power.

Just days later (21 December), Johnny(Commissioner) Damon (we're sure he loves that title) center fielder of the New York Yankees, made public his partnership with the GGL, to form the PBGL. The Professional Baseball Gaming League will permit Joe Videogamer to game with many of his favorite pro baseball players in the Professional Baseball Gaming League's selected arena of online gaming competition, Project Gotham Racing 3.

Also there's the steady convergence of Tinsel Town and the Game Industry toward a common destination. Top video game publisher, Capcom, has already enjoyed a prosperous alliance with the Film Industry when it licensed its Resident Evil property to Impact Pictures and Sony for three separate films (a third is in production). Now they are entering into a partnership with Hyde Park Entertainment to create a Street Fighter blockbuster.

Video gaming is demonstrating itself to be perfectly able to stand on its own, however. To date, June of last year, Microsoft disclosed that more than half a billion full games of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 had been played on Xbox Live. We are not saying half a billion gamers, but 500 million complete matches, that frequently share as many as sixteen shooters at one time. This seems to be more like a trend, than a fleeting fad.

We do not claim to be the smartest guy on the block, but even our dog can see the writing on the wall. How soon before other athletic leagues see the potential in following Johnny Damon's example? maybe if game developers began creating video games specifically for this type of use? EA Sports, do you hear us? Picture the enthusiasm of crazed fans if they got to play John Madden's NFL 2007 with celebrity football players on Xbox Live, in the the off-season? Off-season would stop being a 'killswitch' for the leagues. Public relations and enthusiasm would be permitted to continue all year long. how about pro wrestling? Soccer and FIFA? What would a NASCAR fan pay to race with his favorite driver on Xbox Live? The possibilities are infinite.

Videogaming, andin particular, online video gaming, will certainly transform Entertainment as we know it.
