Sewing Can Be Fun For Children

By: Ben Needles

Ever since I can remember, my mother has always enjoyed sewing. From dresses to couch seat covers, she just wanted to sew all kinds of things. For my mother, sewing was her passion. Like my mother did, you can do activities with your children and teach them to be creative. One of these specific activities that you could do with your children is teaching them the art of sewing.

Sewing may not be the trendiest or popular activity to do, and children may not see sewing as fun at first. However, the key to teaching your children to sew is to make it fun for them to learn. Making things fun to learn is the key to teaching children to do almost anything. Disguise learning with fun, and your kids will never know what hit them! So, what are some ways to make learning the art of sewing fun for your children?

Make Sewing a Group Activity

One way to make any activity fun for children is to allow them to work in groups with their friends. Sometimes learning alone can be a little boring. But group activities tend to be more fun for children because they enjoy company. So, while you are teaching your small group of children how to sew, they will also be practicing their social skills. You may want to consider keeping your group activity small as sometimes bigger groups of children can be difficult to manage by yourself. If you have a bigger group, perhaps you may want to ask for additional parent or adult supervisors to assist you. Hands-on activities are a little different from paper and pencil learning because even you can engage the attention of children better, they become more distracted with playing with the utensils.

Cater Your Sewing Lesson to the Interests of Your Child

Another thing you can do to make sewing fun is to cater to the likes and dislikes of your children. Find out about their favorite television shows and cartoons. See what websites they are going on the internet and what games they play. Ask them what their favorite brand or style of clothes is. Even though your children may be young, chances are that they already have a preference as to what kind of clothes they wear. Based on your findings, you can plan a project to sew a certain style of clothing based on a cartoon character or whatever else your child may be interested in.

In order to get your kids thinking creatively, sometimes you as a parent will have to pave the way for them. Sewing can be fun, so if you would like to teach your children this great skill, it is very possible to get them interested in sewing.
