Biofuel Will Kill Millions
Biofuel is already killing many, many poor people. So it is not that I am trying to be dramatic. I could not possibly be dramatic enough.
Of the earth's 6.66 billion residents, 4 billion live in poverty, and those at the bottom of that group are already very skinny and without sufficient food to be able to function normally. The biofuel famine will push millions of those poorest families into the clutches of death, thanks to our leaders turning mountains of food into biofuel. The estimates are 10 to 20 million dead in 2008 alone! This is urgent, folks, and largely under the radar!
When humans don't get enough food to eat over a prolonged period of time, their immune systems get stressed and weakened, and they become vulnerable to common illnesses which the well fed can easily fight off. When I say that some of these people will die indirectly due to biofuel depleting food resources that is what I mean. They are STILL being starved to death. But many others will simply, literally be starved to death.
The USDA states that by the end of May, US wheat supplies will be lower than at any time since 1948 because so many wheat farmers switched to growing corn for biofuel. And the pendulum does not swing back in this case. US farmers ARE planting more wheat this year but because of the demand for corn for food and energy this will result in dramatic increases in food prices across the globe next year.
Biofuels are a dead end technology that can only lead to more death and destruction of people, property and the atmosphere no matter what biofuel crops we grow. Two years ago the price of corn was only $2 bushel, now due to the increase in demand for corn for biofuel production the price has tripled and since the main thing that we feed poultry and animals is corn… the prices of chicken, eggs, beef and dairy have all gone up as a consequence. In the year 2007, the USA alone turned enough corn, soybeans, and rapeseed into biofuels to satisfy the yearly caloric needs of over 250 million people. According to the World Bank the price of staple foods has soared an astonishing and highly alarming 80% in the last three years since 2005 and there is already a threat of political instability in thirty three countries as a result of this unprecedented change. There have been food riots in at least 20 different countries, even in wealthy Italy. And in countries such as Haiti people have taken to eating “cookies” made from mud The food riots in Haiti have looked more like revolution than just demand for food.
There is no safe way to make biofuels in sufficient quantity to have any significant positive effect on our economy. Objective, industry independent studies show that ethanol from cellulose (switchgrass, wood chips, crops waste, etc.) will never be cost effective. Some companies, including major oil corporations, have sought to extract biodiesel from algae but they have been trying unsuccessfully with a great waster of money and time and effort for over thirty years now. Making ethanol from corn takes so much natural gas, coal, and oil to produce that it is not energy efficient, and certainly not worth the disastrous environmental and human life destruction it causes.
Scores of scientific studies from respected authorities have demonstrated that results from biofuel generation include torture of wildlife, destruction of the biosphere and faster global warming.
There is so much evidence that biofuel is a disastrous "solution" to the Earth and its inhabitants, that one wonders who promotes it still. Obviously, not anyone with humanity's best interests at heart.
